Frequently Asked Questions

  • Check in / Check out

    1. I was approved for a dorm and I'm trying to schedule my flights. When can I check-in and check-out?
You can check in at exactly 2 p.m. PST the day before your Piscine or program start date. Check-out for the Piscine is the day after your final exam. Your final exam is 4 Fridays from your start date. Check-out time is between 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. PST. Click here for an example. The Piscine start and end Dates are also available on 42.us.org

    2. Can I move in before my check-in day? / Can I stay at dorms for a few days after my Piscine ends?
Sorry, we do not make exceptions.

    3. Can I check-in after the designated time?
If it is within a few days of the move-in date, definitely. Just be sure to email the RAs at [email protected] if you are expecting to arrive late. Be nice to them as they are people with their own coding lives, too!

    4. I already checked-out of my room. When will I get my deposit back?
Please be sure to return your keys to the RAs and have the RAs inspect your room before check-out. Your deposit will be returned to you ASAP, though give or take 30 business days for the refund to appear on your bank statement. Payment Status According to PayPal

  • Payment

    5. Why do I have to pay if the dorms are free?
-> A security deposit is required to ensure that you:
-> Do not trash the living area
-> Do NOT trash the living area
-> Respect common spaces and the community

    * Note - The first two are the same to ensure that you are clean and do not break things. Everything else (room, water, electricity, wifi) is free. The deposit will be refunded to you at the end of your program provided you do not violate Terms and Conditions.

    6. Do I have to pay a deposit? / How much is the deposit?
Yes, “pisciners” must pay a refundable deposit of $42 and cadets must pay a refundable deposit of $84. Deposits must be made with credit or debit card only. Due to transaction fees, cadets may see a small amount subtracted from their deposit if it is returned.

    7. When is the due date for the payment?
When you want to ensure that you have a dormitory space.

    8. How do I get my security deposit/refund back?
If complications arise and you cannot attend the Piscine/42 Program, feel free to email [email protected]. If you are already a resident at the dorms and will be leaving soon, be a clean and responsible human coder and return your keys in a timely manner.

    9. I am literally a trash golem, my existence is trash. Will I get my deposit back?
If your room is trashed or deemed unclean, you will not get your deposit back. Sorry! Also, if mattresses, bed frames, tables, desks, etc belonging to your room are found misplaced, you will not be eligible for full refund.

    10. I don't have a PayPal account. How do I pay?
We're working on having alternative methods of card payments. Stay tuned! If your Piscine start date arrives before the update, you can pay (with credit/debit) when you check-in. We do not accept cash payments.

  • Application Process

    11. What do I need as proof that I can be at the dorms? / Why was I rejected?
In order to live in the dorms, you must be at least 18 years of age and must prove that you can legally be in the U.S. for the duration of your studies. If you are a U.S. citizen, this requires you to provide a scan or copy of your U.S. Passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate. If you are not a U.S. citizen, this requires that you send us a scan or copy of your Visa, U.S. resident card, Canadian passport, or ESTA visa waiver (Piscine only).

    12. When can I expect to hear if I got a dorm?
Dorm confirmations are typically sent beginning two months before the start of the Piscine or start date. If you submit your application and pay your deposit during that window, you will generally hear back from us within a week.
